Animal Paradise:Royal Chitwan National Park

Located beneath the Himalayan foothills in the flat Terai region of Nepal, the dense jungles of Chitwan, abounding with wildlife, was the fabled hunting ground of British kings and Rana Maharajas. Today it is a National Park and the only thing you shoot from is a camera while on elephant back safari. You will pass through jungles filled with various species of animals and birds - the finest wildlife experience in Asia! If you are lucky you may see fresh water Gangetic dolphins. There are about fifty different species of mammals and at least sixty-seven different types of butterflies have been spotted.


Untouched Wilderness:Royal Bardia National Park



Journey into the remote past when you visit the ancient jungles of the Royal Bardia National Park. "Watching the sun rise over the forest from the back of an elephant is like having a box seat at the dawn of time," says the Lonely Planet Guide Book. In the lush jungles and open savannas of the park, you have a better chance of seeing a Royal Bengal Tiger than at any other place in Nepal. Also look out for leopards, sloth bears, rhesus monkeys, barking deer, wild boars, and the Asian one-horned rhinoceros. There are about 250 different species of birds, including some endangered ones. In the rushing Geruwa River can be found the famous mahseer game fish, gharial and mugger crocodiles, and the amazing Gangetic dolphin! Combining a trek through Bardia with a white water rafting trip on the Karnali River is the experience of a lifetime.


Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve


Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is a paradise for bird watchers, with an area of 175 square kilometers. The park is situated on the bank of the Sapta Koshi River. The vegetation consists mainly of grassland, scrub and deciduous forests. The reserve is unique for its 100 or so surviving wild water buffaloes. Other mammals found are the hog deer, wild boar, and the Nilgai. There are a total 280 species of birds here including 20 ducks, two ibises, many storks, egrets and herons, the endangered swamp partridges and Bengal floricans. The region is a resting-place for migrating birds not seen anywhere else in Nepal. The endangered Gharial crocodile and Gangetic dolphin have also been sighted in the Koshi River.

Sagarmatha National park

It has an area of 1,148 sq.km and is established in 1976. It is situated in North-east in khumbu region. Flora includes pine and hemlock forests, fir, juniper, binch, rhodeden-dron. Fauna are tahr, ghoral, serow, musk deer, snow leopard, himaliayan black bear, jackal, langur etc.

Langatang National Park

It has an area of 1,710 Sq.Kms and established in 1976. It is situaed in the central himalaya which lies in between west to the Trisuli river and east to the sun-koshi river. The slora includes coak and pine forests, grassland with aks, chir pine, maple, fir, blue pine, hemlock, spruce and warious species of rhododendron. The jauna includes wilddog, red panda, musk deer, himalayan black bear, himalayan tahr, ghoral, rhesus monkey, common langur etc.

A National Park is a separate reserved area in which wild animals, birds, vegetation geographical area and landscapes are systematically managed.

National Parks are important for Natural beauty and scene. In this area, no one is allowed to enter without permission, Animal hunting and cutting plants are strictly prohibited. Grazing of domestic animals and construction of houses are also not allowed

The National Parks of Nepal are (1) Royal Chitwan National Park, (2) Sagarmatha National Park, (5) Shey Phoksundo National Park, (6) Khastad National Park, (7) Royal Bradia National Park, (8) Makalu National Park.

Out of these eight National Parks, Rara is the smallest and Shey Phoksundo is the largest in Nepal.

 

Royal Chitwan National Park

It has an area of 932 Sq. km. ans is established in 1973. It is situated in the Sub-tropical inner Terai of south central Nepal. The flora includes sal forests, grassland, khayar, sisso, simal, etc. The fauna includes 43 species of mammals i.e one hoened rhinoceros, thger crocodile, gaur, wild elephants, striped hyena, gangetic dolphin, python etc. 450 species of birds i.e. black stork, peajowl, red jungle jowl, kingfishers etc are found in this park.

Makalu Barun National Park

It has an area of 1500 sq. Km. and established in 1992. It is located n the Sankhuwasabha and Solukhumbu district, bordered by the Arun River on the east , the Nepal - Tibet border on the north. The flora includes Schimacastanopsis? forest, fir, birch, rhododendron forests, several types of grasses, rhododendron, juniper, drchids, medicinal plants, 67 species of medicinal plants 30 varieties of rhododendron, 19 species of bamboo, 15 oaks etc. The fauna includes endangered red panda kusk deer, himalayan black bear clouded leopard, ghoral, himalayan tahr, wild boar, barking deer, himalayan mormot, comman langur monkey, serow. There are about 84 verities of fishes.

Rara National Park

It is area is of 106 sq. km. and is established in 1976. It is located in North - West Nepal. Rara lake is found in this park. Flora includes blue pine, black juniper, spruce,oak, himalayan cypress, fir, birch, Indian horse chestnut, walnut, etc. The fauna includes must deer, Himalayan? black bear . leopard, ghoral, himalayan tahr, wild boar, birds includes water fowl, great created grebe, black necked greber, red crested pochard, snow cock, chukor, partide, Impeyan pheasant (Danphe), Kalij pheasant, and blood pheasant.

Shey- Phoksundo National Park

It has an area of 3555 sq. km. and is established in 1984. It is located in the mountainous region of western Nepal. The flora includes blue pine, spruce, poplar, cypress deodar, fir and birch. The fauns includes snow leopard, blue sheep, ghoral, himalayan tahr, serow, leopaed, wolf, jackal, himalayan mouse, langur, rhesus monkey, etc. Birds includes impey an pheasant (Danphe), blood pheasant, red and yellow billed Cough, jungle crow etc.

 

 

Khaptap National Park

It's area is 255 sq. km. and established in 1984. it is located in the mid mountain region of far western Nepal. The flora includes frass land, coniferous forests, chirpine, spruce, fir maple, birdh, rhododendron, bamboo stands lnifgalol, medicinal herbs. The? fauna includes leopard, himalayan , black bear, musk deer, ghoral, himalayan tahr etc. Birds found here are impey an pheas ant, chukor partridge, kalji, pheasant manal, red and yellow billed, blue magpie.

Royal Bardia National Park

It has the area of 968 sq. km. and is established in 1984. It is located in mid -far-western terai, east of the karnali river. The flora includes sal forest grass land riverine forests etc. The faina includes rhino ceros, wild elephant, tiger, swampdeer. black buck, corcodile, marsh mugger crocodile, gangetic dolphin. The endangered birds include sarus, cane, migrator birds etc. ?

Wildlife Conserration

Until 1950, Nepal was very rich in fauna and many varieties of animals were found. Increase in human population gave adverse effects on the wildlife. Man destroy the forests for cultivation of land and for building houses. The rhincocerous are killed fr their horn. Tiger, deer, etc are killed for skin. The forests are being destroyed due to migrations from mountains regions to Terai. Deforestation and clearing of forests for agriculture, are also adversely effecting wildlife. One horned rhino, crocodiles, tiger etc are in the state of disappearance. His majesty's Government has established National Parks and Wildlife reserves to protect wild animals. At present , there are 8 National Parks and 4 Wildlife reserves.

Wildlife Reserves

The Wildlife Reserves are the places where animals and birds are founds in a good number with full protection together with the in National environment. Such places are known as Wildlife reserves. People are not allowed to enter with out prior permission, houses cannot be built, cattle for grazing can not be taken, nothing can be thrown in the river of reserves. With out prior permission from His Majesty's Government, no body is allowed to do any research work. hunting animals or birds, affecting plants. Tourists too are not allowed to enter.

 

 

The Wildlife Reserves of Nepal are:

  1. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserves.
  2. Parsa Wildlife Reserves.
  3. Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserves.
  4. Royal Shukla Phanta Wildlife Reserves.

 

  1. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserves.

It is 175 sq. kms in its ara and established in 1976. It lies on the floodplains of the saptapater grass land with Khayar - Sisoo forest, deciduous mixed riverine forest. The fauna includes wild buffalo or arna, hog deer, wild boar, spotted deer, blue bull, endangeredcrocodiles and gangetic dolphine, 280 species of birds including 20 species of ducks, many storks, egrets, herons and the endangered swamp loatridges and bengal floricans.

2. Parsa Wildlife Reserves.
It's area is 499 sq. kms and is established in 1984. It lies in Chitwan, makawanpur, Parsa and Bara District in central Nepal. The flora includes Khayar, sisso, silk cotton tree etc. The fauna includes wild elephants, tiger, leopard sloth bear, gaur, nlue bull, wild dog, sambar, chittal hog deer, barking deer, langur, striped hyena, jungle coat etc. There are about 300 species of birds like giant hornbill, beafowl, red jungle fowl, wood peckers. Some common snakes are king cobra, common cobra, krait, rat snake and python.

3. Shivapuri Watershed and Wildlife Reserves.
It's area is 144.78 sq. km. ?it lies in the Shivapuri Mountain near by Kathmandu. The Flora includes coniferous forests including different types of trees. Many varieties of birds, mammals are found.

 

4. Royal Shukla Phanta Wildlife Reserves.
Is has an area of 155 sq. km and is established in 1975. It is situated in the southern part of far- western Nepal in kanchanpur District. The Flora includes sal, asna simal, karma, khayar, sisoo. Many species of grasses like impetrate cylindrical, saccharum heteroplogon etc are also found. The fauna includes swamp? deer , elephant, tiger hispid hare, blue bull, leopard, chitthal, hog deer and wild doar. There are about 200 species of birds and snakes like cobra krait, rat, sanke etc.

 

5. Hunting Reserves
The area which is established for hunters to hunt a particular species in a particular time is known as hunting reserve. In these hunting reserves , permission is given to hunt a particular are species . Animals which are in large number are per matted to hunt. There is only one hunting reserve in Nepal i.e. Dhorpatan hunting reserve having an area of 1325 sq. km.

There are two conservation area in Nepal. 1. Annapurna Conservation Area (7000sq.km.) and 2. Makalu Conservation Area (830 sq. km.)
